Who are we?
The Montgomery Philharmonic is a community orchestra — a non-profit organization of adult musicians who voluntarily come together to rehearse and perform the symphony orchestra literature.
We are united by our love of classical music and our skill as instrumentalists, but our members do not earn their livings through performing music.
We are professionals in a wide range of disciplines. You will find music educators; scientists, engineers, and mathematicians; teachers and professors of a wide array of disciplines; physicians and other health care professionals; accountants and others in a wide range of industries; and government employees of every type amongst our members.
Where are we?
Our members come from across the DC metropolitan area. While a few of our members live in the District of Columbia or in Northern Virginia, most of us live in Maryland — specifically Montgomery County.
We’re based in Gaithersburg, which is in the northern part of Montgomery County. If you live in Rockville, Montgomery Village, Potomac, Germantown, Damascus, Silver Spring, Bethesda, etc. — or even as far north as Frederick — we are likely in convenient driving distance from you.
We’re a straightforward commute by car, just off 270/370 near the Gaithersburg/Rockville border. We’re also easily reached via public transportation. From Shady Grove metro station (red line), you can take Ride-On Bus 55, which has a stop one block from the church.
Adult Education Master Classes with Members of the BSO and NSO
Yearly, the Montgomery Philharmonic hosts a special series of Masterclasses with members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra. The classes are a peek into what goes on to prepare string technique and major chamber works. These Adult Education Masterclasses are open to the public.
REHEARSALS
We rehearse on Monday nights. Downbeat is 7 pm. We ask that members be in their seats, tuned (A=440 Hz) and ready to play by then. We usually begin setting up the rehearsal room at 6:30 pm and you are welcome to arrive anytime after that.
Our rehearsal venue is accessible. When you arrive, you can either go up the stairs or take the elevator to the second floor. Our rehearsal room is right at the top of the stairs, by the elevator.
